EDI Plan: The Equality Act and the protected characteristics

Within this EDI Plan, ongoing strands of work focus upon areas guided by the Equality Act 2010. We expect to be held accountable and actively challenged in how we progress our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Plan. We will report to the Trustee Board on progress and bring issues to the attention of Council annually as part of the update on implementing the RCGP strategy 2023-2026.

The protected characteristics

Protected characteristics are specific aspects of a person's identity defined by the Equality Act 2010.

The 'protection' relates to protection from discrimination.

The RCGP Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy aims to develop a culture that actively promotes the appreciation of the protected characteristics and will be reactive to findings and feedback from our people to support a proportionate approach to each.

Diversity within the RCGP

When considering the concept of diversity, it is essential to consider the various characteristics, traits and qualities of individuals within our organisation. It is not only about the protected characteristics.

We have an array of different:

  • Backgrounds
  • Life and work experiences
  • Education
  • Personalities
  • Styles of working (e.g. sessional, salaried, partner, full-time or part-time, portfolio)
  • Learning styles and preferences
  • Geographical locations
  • Countries of origin
  • Parental and caregiving responsibilities
