AKT update
January 2025
We are pleased to announce that we are making some important changes to the AKT examination.
MRCGP: Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)
The Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) is a computer-based assessment that forms part of the MRCGP.
It tests the knowledge base behind independent general practice in the UK within the context of the NHS. Candidates who pass will show they can apply knowledge at a high enough level for independent practice.
The AKT takes place four times a year at Pearson VUE test centres across the UK.
AKT update
Reservations and bookings
Please visit the MRCGP exam key dates page of the website for the current AKT schedule, which includes reservation, booking, examination and results dates for the entire year.
Candidates who intend to sit the AKT must first reserve a place. We are currently accepting reservations for the 2024-25 academic year. Reservations can be made within FourteenFish.
Reasonable adjustments
Candidates who require a Reasonable Adjustment for their AKT should visit the Reasonable Adjustments page for further information. Applications and evidence for Reasonable Adjustments should be submitted in accordance with the dates defined therein. The deadline for submitting a Reasonable Adjustment request for the October 2024 examination has passed, but candidates are reminded that they can submit their application for future examinations now.
AKT resources
The October 2024 feedback report and the latest five-year summary are now available.
Our webpages include several other resources, including:
- an interactive tutorial of the Pearson VUE examination platform
- a series of data interpretation recorded discussions with Professor Michael Harris and interviews with successful AKT candidates
- sample AKT questions.
We trust GP registrars and educators will find these resources helpful.
Examination security - outerwear at Pearson VUE test centres
Candidates are reminded that Pearson VUE will ask them to remove any coats, outerwear and head coverings (unless worn for cultural or medical reasons) prior to testing.
