Development of the RCGP safeguarding standards
The RCGP have developed these general practice specific standards in response to feedback from members and following an RCGP Council motion passed in 2021 that called for general practice specific safeguarding training guidance. In a bold new approach, the RCGP set out to ensure safeguarding is a priority in general practice by moving to an adult learning approach to safeguarding training requirements.
The RCGP safeguarding standards replaces the previous guidance for GPs and general practice roles in the intercollegiate documents (Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff First edition: August 2018 and Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and Competencies for Healthcare Staff Fourth edition: January 2019) which are being updated by the RCPCH and the RCN. The RCGP, RCPCH and the RCN are working collaboratively in the production and update of safeguarding standards across health.
