Our aim
The RCGP Parents and Carers Group aims to foster a supportive and inclusive community by connecting members through engagement and open communication on the RCGP forum.
We advocate for parents and carers by representing their needs in policy discussions, sharing best practices. Our work also focuses on developing practical guidelines and activities to support members in balancing their professional and personal responsibilities.
Dr Jaz Dhillon
Jaz is a GP, GP Appraiser, GP Senior Appraiser, Education lead, GP tutor and GP Mentor, Council member and RCGP Fellow. In the past she has been Deputy Chair of National RCGP GP Registrar committee, and Conference lead for the National RCGP First committee. On a faculty level she has served as Education Lead and Communication Lead. She is passionate about patient care, Clinical Education and Health Care Policy.
Dr Emma Wong
Emma is a F5 GP in Sheffield. She completed her GP training in 2021. Since then, she has worked as salaried, locum and OOH GP and is now a GP Partner. She is a TPD for the Sheffield and Barnsley GP Training Programme, and a pastoral tutor for medical students.
She is a nationally elected Council member of the RCGP, and regional F5 co-lead and Vice Chair for the South Yorkshire North Trent Faculty.
She is a proud mum of one (very active!) toddler and one rescue dog.
Dr Katy Chisenga-Phillipps
Katy is a mother, GP registrar, and a GP registrar representative on the Southeast Thames Faculty. With a passion for supporting others through life transitions, she is also a certified transformational coach, helping professional mothers navigate the challenges of balancing work and family life. Katy’s personal experiences as a working mum fuel her commitment to promoting well-being and confidence for parents and carers within the medical profession.
Dr Tom France
Tom is a GP Registrar based in the Northwest of England. My little boy was born in June ‘24 and so I’ve been learning to balance my training and other commitments with the privilege of being a dad and supporting my wife on this new and exciting journey. My wife and I sadly had two losses before we had our son and as such know all too well the pain involved in seeking to start a family. I hope that this group can do great work in supporting members at all stages of parenthood.
Dr Laura Douglas
Laura is a First-5 GP, having CCT'd in December 2021, based in Yorkshire. My husband and I welcomed our little girl in December 2023 a bit earlier than expected, and am currently juggling returning to work alongside motherhood and breastfeeding. We had a difficulty journey to getting our miracle baby, having had four miscarriages prior to our little girl, and am aware of the impact this can have on us as individuals, as well as clinicians. I am passionate about improving support both on a community level as well as improving practical support offered to GPs by practices around all aspects of parenthood, the good and the bad. Laura is Vice Chair of the Humber and Ridings Faculty and Council Representative for the faculty.
Group outputs
The group is newly created, and we are in the process of producing a workplan the group are going to focus around the following three areas.
- Connect – facilitate member engagement through the RCGP forum, providing a space for open communication and peer support.
- Represent – advocate for parents and carers by influencing policy, sharing best practices, and ensuring meeting accessibility.
- Develop – create practical guidelines and activities to support members in balancing professional and caregiving responsibilities.
Participation from members is encouraged to help shape the direction and impact of the group.
