His Majesty The King becomes new patron of RCGP

The RCGP is delighted to announce His Majesty The King as its new Royal Patron.

The announcement marks the first anniversary of Their Majesties’ Coronations and follows a review of the Patronages of The late Queen, The former Prince of Wales and The former Duchess of Cornwall. The College was among over 1000 organisations to undergo a thorough analysis by Buckingham Palace before the decision was made.

The RCGP has a long association with The Royal Family through the previous Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip who was College President from 1972-73 to mark its 20^th anniversary and then became patron until his death in 2021. He officially opened the College’s headquarters in Euston Square, London, in 2014.

The King, when he was Prince of Wales, also served as President of the College for one year from 1991-1992 to mark its 40th anniversary.

College Chair Professor Kamila Hawthorne said:

“We are delighted that His Majesty The King has chosen to be our patron and look forward to working with him to highlight the excellent contribution that general practice makes to the NHS.

“As well as being an honour for the College, this is a testament to the hard work of our GP members and their teams and the care they deliver to their patients.”
